A 12 bottle case of 1982 Lafite Rothschild has jumped in price by 857 per cent in the past 10 years from £2,613 to £25,000.

It means the investment return on the red wine from Bordeaux is greater than that achieved by investors in the stock market, property, oil, stamps and fine art, according to the London International Vintners Exchange.

As you may have seen in the press recently, the fine wine markets have been having a good summer with the Financial Times reporting the highest monthly rise since summer 2007 with a price rise of between 10 and 13 per cent for the year so far. This news follows a report of price rises on 2008 wines by the Daily Telegraph.
